Dark Winds is going from hunting devils in the desert to searching the City of Angels.
Based on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee book series, Dark Winds returns on Feb. 15 for season 4, featuring new villains and a change of scenery.
In the upcoming installment, the Navajo Tribal Police trio of Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon), Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) and Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) are on a new case, traveling to California to solve a disturbing disappearance.
According to the official description, per AMC, season 4 of Dark Winds "focuses on the search for a missing Navajo girl, which takes Leaphorn, Chee and Manuelito from the safety of Navajo Nation to the gritty terrain of 1970s Los Angeles in a race against the clock to save her from an obsessive killer with ties to organized crime."

Dark Winds season 4 premieres on Feb. 15.
The AMC crime drama is based on Hillerman's Leaphorn & Chee book series and the fourth installment adapts his 1984 novel, The Ghostway.
"It deals with the Navajo experience of ghost sickness," showrunner John Wirth told TV Insider in April 2025. "Which has to do with what happens to a person, in their tradition, if they are exposed to a dead body or if they’re with a person when the person dies."

Dark Winds season 4 will consist of eight episodes, the same number as season 3.
This is an increase from the first two seasons, which each had six episodes.
Leaphorn's adventures will continue after the fourth season; the series was renewed for season 5 in February 2026.
"Over four seasons, Dark Winds has masterfully blended compelling character-driven stories, Navajo culture, spirituality and breathtaking cinematography. We are elated to continue the journey alongside showrunner John Wirth and the incomparable Zahn McClarnon,” Dan McDermott, chief content officer of AMC Networks and President of AMC Studios, said in a statement, per Variety.

In season 4, Leaphorn has a new case to solve, but he is also dealing with his personal relationships, like trying to repair his marriage with his wife, Emma Leaphorn (Deanna Allison).
"He’s trying to dial himself back into the traditions that are important for living a balanced and whole life on the reservation," Wirth explained to TV Insider in January 2026, with McClarnon adding, "Joe will continue to walk a fine line — representing and protecting his people.
"He’s at a crossroad in his life, so he goes looking for 'Hózhó,' the Navajo concept of finding balance, beauty, and personal harmony," the actor teased.
