Alongside a touching message posted to Instagram on Sunday night, Mayer shared a shadowy, black-and-white photo of Weir sitting with his guitar on his lap. He used the caption to directly address Weir in a warm and friendly manner, as if he was casually talking to his good friend once again.
"Okay Bob. I’ll do it your way. Fkn' A…" Mayer, 48, quipped at the start of the caption.
The "Waiting on the World to Change" singer went on to tell Weir, "Thanks for letting me ride alongside you. It sure was a pleasure."

Mayer worked closely with Weir for over a decade, playing together in the Grateful Dead offshoot band, Dead & Company. Weir founded the spinoff group in 2015 with fellow original members, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, along with other musicians. Mayer, one of those enlisted to join the group, stepped in to the lead guitarist role, filling the spot once held by the late Jerry Garcia.
Since 2015, Mayer has played with Dead & Company on a number of tours, developing a close friendship with Weir in the process.
In his emotional message to the late artist on Sunday night, Mayer added, "If you say it’s not the end, then I’ll believe you. I’ll meet you in the music. Come find me anytime."
He signed the post, "JohnBo."
