After winning Kendra Scott's heart, her fiancé Zac Brown had to win over her three sons
Jewelry designer Scott, who got engaged to the musician last July, says Brown really had to 'prove himself' to her boys
"Sometimes I'm like, 'Boys, calm down.' But they put Zac through the wringer!" she says of her "protective" kids
Jewelry designer Kendra Scott says she was thrilled when her fiancé, musician Zac Brown, proposed last July, just three months after they made their red-carpet debut as a couple at the AMA awards in May.
However, she says that after he won her heart, the "Chicken Fried" singer, 47, then had to win over her three sons, Cade, 24, Beck, 21, and Gray, 12.
"They're very protective of me," she tells PEOPLE with a laugh.
"Sometimes I'm like, 'Boys, calm down.' But they put Zac through the wringer! He really had to prove himself to those boys, that's for sure. But they love him, and they're excited for the wedding, and are just happy it's to somebody they know is taking care of me. So it's been really great."

(Brown also has five kids: Daughters Justice, 18, Lucy, 17, Georgia, 15, and Joni, 14, and son Alexander, 11.)
Scott, 51, says she's always been incredibly close with her sons.
"I think with my being a single mom a lot of our lives, the bond that I have with them is so strong," she says. "Like, we've always had to look out for each other. And before I got my first investor, money was tight a lot of the time, and they remember those times, so we're all so grateful for everything that's happened."

She adds with a touch of emotion, "My oldest son Cade is 24, and the other day I was talking to him and he said, 'Mom, I'm so proud of you. You've never given up, and there've been so many times that things have been so hard for you or doors shut in your face, or people that didn't believe in you, and you just persevered through it all.'"
But Scott says she's the one who is proud of her kids.
"They're amazing," she says. "I mean, I have two that are men. One's 21, one's 24, and then the baby's 12. And as a mom, you just hope that you're gonna raise young boys to be fine young men. And they are. I'm so proud of them. They're just kind and thoughtful, and they care so deeply about people. They're all the things you hope that your kids will turn out to be."

They're also still down to hang out with mom all the time.
"I think I see them more now, even more than I did when they were in high school," she says.
"It's so funny. They'll call and be like, 'What are we doing this weekend?' So we're always hanging out together. They're my best friends. We'll ride horses, fish, play pickleball, backgammon, and ping pong. My one son is a cook, so we're always in the kitchen. We also go to Disney World every year. It's fun when your sons are 21 and 24 and still want to go to Disney World with you. But we just love to be together as a family."
