King Charles and Queen Camilla kicked off their four-day state visit to the United States this week, starting in Washington, D.C. This is the first formal state visit to the White House by a British monarch since Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip traveled to D.C. in 2007. That visit marked the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown settlement, while this one coincides with the 250th anniversary of the United States this year. “This will be a substantive visit from the King for the American people,” a source with knowledge of the plans told The Times ahead of the trip.

King Charles has visited the United States on official visits 19 times before as of 2026, but primarily as the Prince of Wales; this will be his first state visit to the country as monarch. He’s also had a few high-profile visits to D.C. before, including in 1970 and 1985. Charles and Camilla have visited the District of Columbia together before in 2005 and 2015. They will be staying at Blair House, the presidential guest residence across the street from the White House, during their stay.

After D.C., the state visit will move north to New York City, where the King and Queen are expected to meet with families of victims and first responders from the terrorist attacks on September 11. In line with her literacy campaign, Queen Camilla is also expected to visit the New York Public Library for an event celebrating English writer A.A. Milne’s famous character Winnie the Pooh, who turns 100 this year.

The U.S. visit will subsequently conclude in Virginia on Thursday, which will include attending a community block party and watching performances by Appalachian cultural groups in celebration of America’s 250th birthday. King Charles will then depart for Bermuda, where he also serves as head of state.
