What to Know About the Late “Voice” Alum Dylan Carter's Family

Dylan Carter, who made a name for himself on The Voice, died on April 25.

His death was confirmed by Moncks County mayor Thomas Hamilton Jr. in an emotional Facebook post on April 26.

"Our family is heartbroken to hear about the passing of Dylan Carter in a car accident. As a gifted singer, he frequently entertained our community with his performances at Town events," Hamilton wrote. "His kindness and charm earned him immense respect, and his absence will be deeply felt."

Dylan rose to fame on season 24 of The Voice when Reba McEntire — who also paid tribute to him on Instagram — chose him and coached him after he performed an emotional version of Whitney Houston's "I Look to You." He advanced to the battle rounds but was eliminated after losing to Tom Nitti.

In addition to music, Dylan was also a real estate agent, the co-founder of a breast cancer charity called The Local Voice and the owner of Sunny Days RV & Campground. He was close to his mom, brother and niece.

Dylan was raised in South Carolina Lowcountry

Dylan was raised in the small town of St. George, S.C., in the Lowcountry region, by his mom, Julie Carter. While he had previously spoken and posted about his love for his mom, Dylan kept his father's identity out of the public eye. His upbringing and hometown inspired Dylan to make music.

"He discovered his passion for music at the age of 10, starting to write songs and perform at local farmers' markets, churches, weddings and special events," his website read.

After Dylan competed on the hit NBC singing competition series in 2023, he returned to South Carolina where he frequently performed at local concerts and weddings. Dylan was set to perform in Moncks County on April 27.

He had a close relationship with his only brother

While Dylan focused much of his social media pages around his music, he occasionally shared pictures with his brother, Cole Carter.

Cole, who keeps much of his life off social media, attended Clemson University and resides in Harleyville, S.C., per his Facebook.

Dylan started pursuing music after his mom died

Dylan's mom, Julie, died on Oct. 15, 2022, per her obituary. Her death devastated Dylan, and he reflected about the loss one year later in an emotional Instagram tribute.

"A year ago today my family lost our sunshine, our backbone, our happiness and joy," he captioned a photo of him with his brother and mother. "My family lost an aunt, a sister, a daughter, a cousin, a friend, and my brother and I lost a mom."

He added, "My mom was more than just a mom to me. She was a mom to everyone. She loved so many people and would do anything for anyone. She always brought a smile with her, no matter how stressed or upset she was, and her laugh was unmistakable."

In the post, Dylan alluded to the fact that his mom's death inspiring him to pursue music and audition for The Voice.

"I think I found my voice… and I will continue to use it to bring hope and healing to people all over the world," he wrote. "My mom always knew I could do it, but I didn’t believe her. It is true that MOM’s know best because tomorrow I will be singing my heart out on National television!!! I would say I wish you were here to see it, but you were up there on that stage with me! As time passes I hear you and see you in me more and more each day. That is why I will continue…. so that you can live your dreams through me!"

When Dylan auditioned for The Voice and sang "I Look to You" — which he also sang at Julie's funeral — he brought the judges to tears.

"I have not sang this song since my mom's funeral," he said. "I couldn't make it through it, so I'm looking at it as a second chance. I'm gonna make my Mom proud."

After Dylan was eliminated from the show, he thanked all of the four judges for turning their chairs around and wanting to mentor him.

“When y’all four turned around for me, I gained so much confidence that I needed,” Dylan said. “And I felt my mom for the first time in a long time. I’m going to keep chasing my dreams, keep chasing her dreams.”

He was a proud uncle

Dylan frequently posted photos with Cole's young daughter, Claire Julie Carter. Dylan called her a "blessing of a baby girl" and brought her along for his gigs, posed with her in front of his real estate properties and celebrated holidays with her.

Dylan and Claire have birthdays just one day apart, and the singer expressed how much he loved sharing a birthday with her.

"I mean it when I say I would not want to share my cracker OR my birthday weekend with anyone else," he captioned a September 2024 photo of Claire reaching for a cracker in his mouth.
